Sensorial Sand Description
May 27, 2024Sensorial Sand: An Artistic Tribute to Nature’s Serenity
Welcome to “Sensorial Sand”, a captivating collection of art pieces crafted from the diverse and rich sands of Tasmania’s beaches and riverbanks.
Hand-harvested from non-protected areas, these sands are naturally imbued with a variety of minerals, giving them a spectrum of colors that reflect the unique geology of different regions in Tasmania. Combined with hand-harvested and refined earth pigments, particularly clay ochre, these materials create a stunningly organic palette for the artworks.
The collection features both small and large circular wall hangings as well as meticulously hand-shaped maps of Tasmania. Each piece is a harmonious blend of natural elements, designed to evoke a sense of balance and tranquility. Some artworks showcase concentric circles, reminiscent of water ripples spreading across a pond, while others capture the fluid, undulating lines of water in motion. Even the Tasmania-shaped pieces, despite their edgier contours, embody the serene patterns of water. In addition to the natural colors derived from the sands and ochres, the artist has selectively incorporated blue and gold acrylics mixed with white sand to enhance the visual appeal.
Each piece also features self-harvested, cleaned, and preserved sponges, delicately adorned with metallic sprays. These sponges, one of the oldest living organisms on Earth, serve as a poignant reminder of the ocean’s vitality and the critical role they play as natural filters. This collection is the artist’s first venture into using entirely organic materials. Despite the inherent fragility of these materials, the artist is committed to their conservation, promising to replace them in case of significant deterioration.
The intention behind “Sensorial Sand” is to immerse the viewer in a state of contemplation and tranquility, encouraging a tactile interaction with the art. The pieces are designed to be touched with clean hands, allowing the audience to feel and connect with the natural elements carefully integrated into each artwork. The presence of the sponges within the pieces also aims to raise awareness about the impacts of ocean warming on marine life. As ancient and unique species, sponges symbolise resilience and the importance of preserving our oceans.
The artist, deeply influenced by the power of the sea, seeks to convey the fluidity and adaptability that water represents. Born by the ocean, she draws inspiration from its perpetual motion and transformative power, reminding us to stay true to our essence while navigating the ebb and flow of daily life.
